Michigan Couple Charged After Throwing Explosive Device Into Neighbor’s Yard

Prosecutors say the incident endangered a 72-year-old neighbor.

Overview

  • Jason and Megan Showers are accused of lighting and tossing a red, cylindrical explosive labeled "BYE BYE" into their neighbor’s yard, an act prosecutors say occurred on Monday, Aug. 3.
  • Police executed a search warrant at the Showers’ home and seized firearms, ammunition and materials for assembling explosive devices.
  • Both were arraigned on felony counts of placing explosives near property and possession of bombs with unlawful intent, and prosecutors say Jason faces additional counts for illegal firearm possession plus a habitual-offender notice.
  • A judge set Jason Showers’ bond at $100,000 cash and ordered a steel-cuff GPS tether, a ban on returning to the home, and no contact with the victim or his wife; Megan’s bond was set at $20,000 with a 10% option and a GPS tether requirement.
  • The 72-year-old neighbor extinguished the device and said he feared he "could have been killed or maimed," the couple is due back in court for a probable cause conference on Aug. 14, and prosecutors warn the charges carry substantial prison exposure.
