Michelada Fest Cancels Union Park Summer Run and Will Return as Free Pilsen Street Festival
The move reflects rising production, labor and insurance costs that organizers say made a large ticketed festival financially untenable.
Overview
- Organizers canceled the planned Union Park three-day festival and announced a free, street‑based Michelada Fest scheduled for Sept. 18–20 on Cermak Road between Racine and Canalport.
- Windy City Events Management said steep costs for stages, sound, lighting, labor and insurance made the Union Park production unaffordable and forced the downscale return to the festival’s Pilsen roots.
- Ticket buyers will receive automatic refunds with the process set to begin within 15–30 days and most refunds issued to the original form of payment.
- Vendors contracted for the June event will be accommodated at the company’s Windy City Margarita Fest in August while artist participation from the originally announced national and international acts remains unresolved.
- This is the second straight year the festival has been canceled after prior visa and political issues, highlighting how rising event costs and permit and policing limits are squeezing independent, Latino‑led festivals in Chicago.
