Overview
- Police were dispatched around 2:13 p.m. Sunday after reports that a person with two large edged weapons was causing a disturbance at Tropical Chevrolet.
- A short time later an officer encountered the individual near Northeast 86th Street and Biscayne Boulevard and discharged a firearm, striking the person.
- Officers rendered first aid on scene and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the injured man to Jackson Memorial’s Ryder Trauma Center for treatment.
- Video and witness accounts showed a sword- or machete-like weapon near the injured man and Biscayne Boulevard was temporarily closed for crime-scene processing.
- The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the independent investigation, the officer is on administrative duties, and officials have withheld names and medical details pending the probe.
