Mhow Water Illness Cluster in Indore Triggers Surveys and Temporary Hospitals

The response follows a December Bhagirathpura outbreak that tests tied to sewage mixing in the drinking supply.

Overview

  • Officials reported at least nine hospitalisations in Mhow, with total cases ranging from a dozen suspected to about 25 affected in Patti Bazaar, Chander Marg and Moti Mahal.
  • Symptoms include jaundice, typhoid and liver-related infection, with several children among the patients and others treated at home for milder illness.
  • Indore administration deployed 12 door-to-door survey teams, opened two temporary hospitals, and collected blood and water samples while issuing boil-water and hygiene advisories.
  • District Collector Shivam Verma inspected the area, ordered treatment and water-quality checks by the Mhow Cantonment Board, and called in specialist teams including from Indore Medical College.
  • Mhow testing is ongoing, and the episode revives scrutiny from the High Court and NGT after Bhagirathpura’s E. coli contamination tied to a pipeline leak; a new local report of a Bhagirathpura death was noted as officials disputed the cause.
