MGNREGA Work Stalls as Protests Mount Over Unclear VB–G RAM G Rollout

Opposition leaders say the notified replacement scheme has not begun on the ground.

Overview

  • Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, posting Monday, accused the Centre of stopping MGNREGA and failing to launch the VB–G RAM G scheme.
  • In Muzaffarpur, an 87-day sit-in has grown after nearly 12,000 registered workers said they received no work for three to four months, with a delegation visiting Delhi on March 25.
  • Workers and activists report that panchayats in Rajasthan and other states turned people away or refused Form 6 work requests, saying they were waiting for new VB–G RAM G paperwork.
  • District officials in several areas say they were told not to start new MGNREGA works, while the Rural Development Ministry says no such stop order exists.
  • The VB–G RAM G Act was notified in December 2025 but needs Centre–state rules before rollout, and the pause has cut a typical ₹25,000–₹28,000 a year lifeline for many rural and women-led households.
