Mexico’s Tax Agency Details Who Loses Automatic Tax Refunds and Sets 150,000-Peso Cap

Blocked taxpayers must file through the FED online form with a 10 to 40 business day response window.

Overview

  • Mexico’s SAT listed seven situations that cancel automatic deposits, including income in co-ownership or marital property, prior-year claims, an already filed FED, not choosing “refund” in the return, appearing on SAT’s published lists under articles 69 or 69-B, using flagged invoices, or having a canceled digital certificate.
  • Automatic refunds apply only to individuals who submit the annual return online with password or e.firma and who actively select the refund option in the filing.
  • If the deposit does not arrive, the SAT advises checking return status on its portal, verifying the CLABE bank account number is correct and in your name, correcting errors with a complementary return, or filing a FED request when required.
  • Formal refund requests filed through FED take 10 to 40 business days for a decision, and if the SAT pays after that window on a valid claim, it must add interest.
  • Accountants report better automation but say errors and traffic spikes still cause delays, and the SAT’s claim of paying over 10 billion pesos in automatic refunds has prompted calls to verify deposits and keep records.
