Mexico’s Olinia Sets June Debut for Two Low-Speed Urban EV Prototypes

The government-backed startup is pursuing roughly $200 million in private funding pending formal approval of a new light urban vehicle category.

Overview

  • CEO Roberto Capuano says engineering on the first two units wraps this month, with a June unveiling followed by initial fabrication and testing.
  • The prototypes comprise a passenger model for a driver plus up to five riders and a cargo version for two occupants with up to 600 kg payload, both limited to 50 km/h for city use.
  • Market pricing is currently estimated around 150,000 pesos, with prior guidance indicating a broader band of 90,000 to 150,000 pesos depending on version.
  • The new category for light urban EVs has been published in Mexico’s official gazette and remains awaiting full regulatory approval.
  • Backed by federal seed and related public allocations of about 225 million pesos and coordinated with IPN, TecNM and UNAM, the project targets series production in early 2027 and pegs potential domestic demand at up to 100,000 units a year.
