Overview
- Mexico’s economically active population reached 61.3 million, with 59.5 million employed and 1.8 million unemployed in the third quarter.
- Informal employment rose to about 33 million people (55.4% of workers) as net informal gains offset losses in formal jobs over the past year; 4.3 million were subemployed (7.2%).
- Job growth was concentrated in services and trade, led by commerce (+227,000), restaurants and lodging (+164,000) and manufacturing (+103,000), while primary activities shed roughly 372,000 jobs.
- Labor poverty eased to 34.3% (–0.8 pp year over year), yet real labor income per capita edged down 0.1% to 3,344 pesos and the real national wage mass fell 2.3% (about 8.8 billion pesos).
- Regional and demographic gaps persisted, with highest labor poverty in Chiapas (61.1%), Oaxaca (58.1%) and Guerrero (52.3%); highest unemployment in Tabasco (4.8%), Coahuila and Mexico City (3.9%) and Sonora (3.5%); male participation was 75.1% versus 45.7% for women.
