Mexico’s January Revenue Jumps as ‘Healthy’ Excise Taxes Take Effect

January’s gains reflect the start of higher excise taxes on harmful products.

Overview

  • Total federal revenue reached 649,082 million pesos in January 2026, a real increase of 8.6% year over year, according to the SAT.
  • Tax collection totaled 595,758 million pesos, up 11% in real terms, with IEPS receipts at 88,864 million pesos for an 18.8% real gain.
  • The IEPS increase was driven in part by higher rates on cigarettes and sweetened beverages that began January 1, alongside new levies on casinos and online betting.
  • Income tax (ISR) brought in 326,991 million pesos, a 13.5% real rise, while value‑added tax (IVA) collected 152,873 million pesos, up 1.4% in real terms.
  • January revenue exceeded projections in the 2026 revenue law, and follows a record 2025 IEPS take of 159,643.1 million pesos with tobacco leading; authorities frame the hikes as health measures as INEGI notes price effects and industry groups warn of strains on small retailers.
