Mexico’s Disarmament Drive Removes 2,135 Firearms

Officials are urging the United States to curb illegal arms flows following the latest national disarmament tally.

Overview

  • The federal “Sí al desarme, sí a la paz” program has collected and destroyed 2,135 firearms, 200 grenades, dynamite cartridges, detonators and over 85,000 rounds of ammunition so far in 2025.
  • Among the weapons surrendered anonymously are high-power rifles including AK-47s, R-15s and M-16s that government officials say no longer pose risks in homes and communities.
  • In Chiapas authorities destroyed 638 seized long and short guns and more than 79,000 rounds of ammunition at a ceremony marking the UN’s International Day for Destruction of Small Arms.
  • Mexico City has dismantled 962 weapons through its voluntary exchange program since January to reduce the dangers of domestic gun ownership.
  • The administration highlights that over 70% of arms used in Mexican violence are smuggled from the United States and is pressing Washington for tougher border enforcement.
