Mexico’s Basic Food Basket Tops 2,000 Pesos in December, ANPEC Finds

ANPEC urges shoppers to favor neighborhood stores during the holiday price squeeze.

Overview

  • The Canasta Básica Alimentaria reached 2,020.47 pesos nationwide, a 0.80% month‑over‑month rise from November.
  • ANPEC’s study sampled more than 200 points of sale across all 32 states using a stratified methodology covering 44 staple foods.
  • Tabasco posted the sharpest monthly increase in the basket, followed by Coahuila, Puebla, Campeche and Jalisco.
  • The steepest product hikes were recorded in jitomate, chile jalapeño, chiles en escabeche, tomate verde and frijol.
  • ANPEC attributes the pressure to climate disruptions, insecurity and higher operating costs, and highlights the resilience of small merchants while calling for support of local commerce.
