Mexico’s Banks to Enforce User-Set Digital Transaction Caps From Jan. 1

Most personal accounts must use app-based limits; Level 1 accounts are excluded.

Overview

  • Starting January 1, 2026, digital operations that exceed a customer’s configured MTU can be blocked or require extra validation.
  • If no limit is set, banks apply a reported default monthly cap of 12,800 pesos covering transfers, service payments, card charges, SPEI and CoDi.
  • The MTU requirement applies to individuals using electronic banking across most accounts and products, with only Level 1 accounts exempt.
  • Sofipos and some fintech platforms not operating as multiple banking institutions say the transitory MTU rule does not apply to them; Nu reports it is building the feature for when its bank operations begin.
  • Banks have enabled in-app tools since October to set or edit limits, with published steps by BBVA, HSBC, Santander, Banorte and Banamex for adjusting caps and authenticating changes.
