Mexico’s Auto Industry Diverges in January: Light Vehicles Steady, Heavy Trucks Plunge

U.S. tariffs are prompting calls for steeper import duties on used heavy trucks to protect jobs.

Overview

  • INEGI reported 303,980 light vehicles built in January, down about 2.7% year over year, with exports up 2.3% to 224,528 and domestic sales up 8.7% to 131,491.
  • Shipments to the United States accounted for 73.2% of light‑vehicle exports but fell 10.4%, while Canada’s share rose to 13.4% and exports to Germany jumped about 158%.
  • Brand results diverged sharply, with Volkswagen up 66.4% and General Motors up about 22%, versus steep drops at Mazda (~44%), Toyota (~43%) and Nissan (~31%); SUVs made roughly half of output.
  • Nuevo León outperformed the national trend with record January levels, producing 25,600 light vehicles and exporting 19,968, reflecting localized resilience.
  • Heavy‑vehicle output sank 51.9% to 6,793 units and exports fell 53.8% to 5,076, with industry groups reporting roughly 6,000 jobs lost and urging a hike in duties on used truck imports to 50%.
