Mexico’s 2026 Minimum Wage Takes Effect With Targeted, Not Automatic, Raises

The new rates serve as a legal floor that triggers increases only for pay below the threshold or for occupations with updated professional minimums.

Overview

  • Effective January 1, the general daily minimum is 315.04 pesos and the Free Zone of the Northern Border rate is 440.87 pesos, according to Conasami.
  • The law requires raises only for workers now below the new floor, those who earned the previous minimum, or those covered by professional minimums, while above-minimum salaries do not adjust unless contracts index pay to the minimum or mandate reviews.
  • Conasami updated 61 professional minimums, most now above 300 pesos per day, with top rates at 705.46 pesos for print reporters and photojournalists.
  • Workers who did not receive required adjustments can file complaints with Profedet; violations can draw fines of 250 to 5,000 UMA, and payroll calculations for IMSS, Infonavit and income tax may change.
  • Consultancies report companies plan 1–5% raises for many roles, raising risks of wage compression for mid-level staff and encouraging wider use of performance-based bonuses to retain talent.
