Mexico Tightens Drug-Supply Oversight After Reaching 97% Availability

Health officials will bar suppliers that failed to deliver most of their orders to speed fixes for the remaining gaps.

Overview

  • The federal government, which on Tuesday reported average availability above 97% across IMSS, ISSSTE and IMSS-Bienestar, set a goal of full coverage and told patients to use Trato Digno modules, recetacompleta.gob.mx and the 079 line to report missing medicines.
  • The Health Ministry will publish vendor compliance records and block firms that delivered under roughly 75% from taking part in the 2027–2028 consolidated purchases.
  • IMSS dispensed 371.2 million pieces over the past six months, with fill rates of 97.7% in primary care, 97.5% in general hospitals and 98.4% in high‑specialty units, supported by near‑universal electronic prescriptions.
  • ISSSTE reported 97% stock across 766 pharmacies, with 592 locations between 95% and 100% and none below 90%, reflecting tighter inventory control and transfers between branches.
  • The Health Secretariat cut the national medicine catalogue from 2,753 to 1,929 keys to favor safer and more effective drugs, estimating viable substitutions for 21% of primary‑care, 41% of hospital and 9% of pediatric treatments.
