Mexico Signs Diplomat-Training Pact With El Colegio de México as It Seeks Role in Adelanto Detention Suit

The moves reflect the Sheinbaum government’s push to link stronger diplomat training with a more forceful defense of Mexicans in U.S. detention.

Overview

  • México’s diplomatic academy, the Instituto Matías Romero, and El Colegio de México signed a collaboration Monday that brings Colmex scholars into courses, seminars, and joint publications for the foreign service.
  • Foreign minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente said the pact advances a plan to prioritize the training and professional growth of new Mexican diplomats in line with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s goals.
  • The foreign ministry said it is taking consular steps after a recent death of a Mexican national at the Adelanto immigration detention center in California, which it says adds to two earlier deaths at the same site.
  • The ministry scheduled a press conference at the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles, led by consular protection chief Vanessa Calva Ruiz, to announce Mexico’s plan to file an amicus curiae brief in a case over conditions at Adelanto.
  • The lawsuit by Public Counsel of Los Angeles alleges filthy living areas, punitive isolation, limited medical and mental health care, little access to outdoor time, and inadequate food and water at the facility.
