Mexico Sets Record Formal Employment in March as Year-Over-Year Hiring Grows

Officials say the gains point to a resilient job market despite a short-term dip in another comparison.

Overview

  • IMSS, which tracks formal payroll jobs, reported a record 22,724,680 affiliated workers in March 2026 after a monthly gain of 32,930.
  • Across the first quarter, ENOE, a national labor survey that counts formal and informal work, showed 422,000 more employed than a year earlier and a total of 60.2 million people working.
  • The government said the unemployment rate was 2.4 percent, which it called the lowest among OECD countries.
  • IMSS reported the average insured wage at 663.5 pesos per day, up 7.1 percent in a year, which lifts benefits that are calculated from that base pay.
  • Some outlets also noted an ENOE decline of 227,155 employed between January and March on a quarter-to-quarter basis, which officials linked to U.S. measures affecting steel and auto sectors.
