Mexico Sets Panel to Drive CURP Biometric Rollout as Pilot Sign-ups Grow

The move signals a push for shared identity checks across federal services.

Overview

  • The Interior Ministry issued rules creating a technical committee to promote adult biometric registration and enable identity validation between federal agencies.
  • Members include RENAPO and representatives from IMSS, ISSSTE and INFONAVIT, with Deputy Minister Arturo Medina named to the panel.
  • CURP is Mexico’s national population ID code, and the upgrade links fingerprints, iris scans, a face photo and a digital signature to each person’s record.
  • Enrollment is free and voluntary for now, and officials and specialists say some procedures could require the biometric record in the future.
  • RENAPO is registering people at a limited set of sites, with most appointments booked at citas.renapo.gob.mx, and some seniors with a valid INAPAM card allowed walk-in access on assigned days at certain modules such as the Zona Rosa office in Mexico City and pilot locations in Michoacán, Veracruz and Zacatecas; registrants receive an email receipt instead of a physical card.
