Mexico Sets April 26 Launch for AIFA Suburban Rail Link After Majority Takeover

Public ownership under a new operator signals a shift in how Mexico’s airport rail link will run.

Overview

  • The new service, set to open Sunday, April 26, will link Buenavista in central Mexico City to Felipe Ángeles International Airport in about 39 minutes over a newly built rail branch.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum said the federal government bought a majority stake in the Suburban Rail, taking control that had largely been held by Spanish firm CAF.
  • Operation will fall to Fonadin, a public infrastructure trust housed in Banobras that also runs the MexicoToluca line known as El Insurgente.
  • ATTRAPI, the federal rail and transit agency, received two bids to install MI smart-card and QR payment equipment on the airport branch from MICROSAFE and Inmobiliaria SOD, with a selection expected this week.
  • Final fares have not been set, with reports ranging from about 40 pesos to as high as 210 pesos, and officials plan distance-based taps at entry and exit that could shape costs for airport workers and travelers.
