Mexico Sets 350 Billion-Peso School Infrastructure Plan for the Sexenio

Community-run school committees will manage nearly half the funds through La Escuela es Nuestra.

Overview

  • The federal government, which outlined the plan Monday, earmarked 113,732 million pesos for 2026 under the multi‑year package.
  • The La Escuela es Nuestra program will get 26 billion pesos this year to upgrade 75,405 schools serving about 8.5 million students.
  • SEP says 72,349 school committees are registered, with Banco del Bienestar cards going out in April and May and disbursements due by the end of May.
  • Education Secretary Mario Delgado says roughly 45% of the total will flow through La Escuela es Nuestra, where parent and teacher committees choose projects, hire crews, and track spending.
  • The plan targets 200,000 new student places during the administration and builds on seven years that officials say delivered 341,786 million pesos for school works versus 304,907 million in 2000–2018.
