Mexico Reports 10 Deaths Linked to ICE as Chicago Raids Face Court Oversight

Mexico’s disclosure of custodial deaths has sharpened scrutiny of enforcement tactics and accountability.

Overview

  • Mexico’s Foreign Ministry said ten Mexican nationals have died in ICE custody or during operations since January, with the latest reported in San Bernardino on Oct. 24.
  • Mexican officials cited 169 ICE operations and 2,382 Mexican detainees since Jan. 20, along with 116,320 repatriations and 13 diplomatic notes seeking clarifications.
  • A federal judge in Chicago, Sara Ellis, ordered participating agents to wear body cameras and set a preliminary hearing for Nov. 5 following clashes during recent raids.
  • Human Rights Watch reported alleged excessive force in Chicago, saying agents used tear gas and projectiles on protesters, medics and journalists during Operation Midway Blitz, which logged more than 1,500 arrests.
  • In New York’s Chinatown, DHS said a Canal Street action targeting counterfeit sales led to nine arrests as demonstrators surrounded agents, and in the Chicago area a viral video showed an agent pointing a gun at a pregnant woman, which DHS defended as a protective response.
