Mexico Reclaims 1,126 Mining Concessions Covering 889,512 Hectares

Officials cast the campaign as strict enforcement of concession rules to curb speculation.

Overview

  • Authorities report 713 of the recovered titles lay inside protected natural areas, totaling about 249,108 hectares now returned to state control.
  • Cancellations were applied for legal noncompliance, including two years of unpaid rights and omissions in required exploration and statistical reports.
  • Roughly 90% of the cancelled titles were held by individuals rather than large mining companies, according to the Economy Ministry.
  • Recoveries are concentrated in traditional mining states such as Sonora, Durango, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Zacatecas and Jalisco.
  • Officials said the process also includes voluntary returns following talks with industry, citing Minera Autlán and Peñoles, and noted the review was undertaken at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s request.
