Mexico Reclaims 1,126 Irregular Mining Concessions in Sector Overhaul

A crackdown on inactive, unpaid or speculative titles marks a push for tighter resource governance.

Overview

  • Officials said 1,126 concessions totaling about 889,512 hectares have been recovered during the current administration.
  • The Secretariat of Economy framed the cancellations as part of reordering the extractive sector by targeting titles with no exploration, unpaid fees or speculative holding.
  • About 90% of the cancellations involved private individuals and 10% involved companies, with cases including Autlán and Peñoles.
  • Mexico joined an international working group that will spend the next 60 days assessing joint steps toward a multilateral agreement on critical minerals.
  • The government also launched a measles vaccination locator with a 079 hotline, reported a humanitarian aid shipment arriving in Cuba, and said drone incidents in El Paso had no impact on Mexican territory.
