Mexico Ramps Up Heat Response as Forecasts Top 40°C

Mexico's social security institute launched a nationwide heat response to speed care during the current spike in temperatures.

Overview

  • IMSS set up a Heat Wave Command to coordinate prevention and fast care across all 32 states.
  • Mexico’s weather service expects temperatures above 38°C in many regions, with parts of Jalisco, Michoacán, Nuevo León, Colima, Campeche, Yucatán and Zacatecas topping 40°C.
  • State surveillance in Baja California has logged five heat‑related cases this season, and the medical examiner confirmed a child’s death from heat stroke in Mexicali.
  • Mexicali kept a 24‑hour hydration hub open at Plaza del Mariachi and runs a mobile route from 10:00 to 17:00 to reach people at risk.
  • Doctors warn that heat stroke begins when core temperature passes 40°C and that people need rapid physical cooling rather than drugs like paracetamol, ibuprofen or diclofenac.
