Mexico Opens Appointments for Biometric CURP as 2026 Rollout Begins

Enrollment remains voluntary through 2026 at no cost.

Overview

  • RENAPO and Registro Civil modules, including mobile units, are now taking appointments nationwide as the biometric upgrade begins wider use in early February.
  • Appointments are booked on RENAPO’s official portal by choosing the biometric CURP registration, entering CURP and contact details, selecting a date and time, and printing the confirmation receipt.
  • The procedure is strictly in person to capture fingerprints, photograph and electronic signature, with iris scanning in some cases, and typically takes about 15 minutes with an official ID, traditional CURP and, if requested, a birth certificate.
  • Authorities emphasize that participation requires express consent, remains optional throughout 2026, and is entirely free, with warnings to avoid paid intermediaries.
  • The program will roll out gradually and, once consolidated, the biometric CURP will serve as an official ID; meanwhile, the certified CURP can be obtained online for free via the government’s gob.mx portal.
