- The program, presented Friday, June 5, formally incorporates Holbox into SEMARNAT’s national strategy “Hacia un México Circular” as the federal government’s first model site to move from a linear to a circular economy.
- Planned measures include the federal Basura Cero framework, a biodigester sized to process about one tonne of organic waste per week, installation of 24 solar panels, and codes of good practice for residents and visitors.
- Federal and local bodies — including CONANP, FONATUR, the Navy, CFE, SENER, SECTUR, the Quintana Roo government and Lázaro Cárdenas municipal officials — have pledged coordinated implementation on the island.
