- President Claudia Sheinbaum signed a decree on Wednesday, July 1 that reclassifies the Instituto Nacional de Estudios Históricos de las Revoluciones de México (INEHRM) as an organismo público de investigación under the Secretaría de Ciencia, Humanidades, Tecnología e Innovación (Secihti).
- Felipe Arturo Ávila will remain director and the institute will join the Sistema Nacional de Centros Públicos de Investigación to align its work with Mexico’s national research network.
- INEHRM will launch teaching functions with three initial licenciaturas (History; Social Sciences and Humanities; Public Administration and Good Government), three master’s degrees and shorter programs, with admissions calls in July, a preparatory course in August and classes starting in September at Guatemala 80 in Mexico City.
- The government says the institute will prioritize contemporary research—explicitly including study of the advance of the extreme right in Mexico and Latin America—while maintaining that the change will not reduce resources for existing research centers and that 200 new academic positions were authorized this year.
- Officials promise free digital publications, translations into indigenous languages, audiobooks for the visually impaired and a collegiate of senior and younger regional scholars, with formal budgetary and operational integration into Secihti to be finalized in upcoming fiscal processes and publication in the Diario Oficial de la Federación.
