Mexico Kills CJNG Leader ‘El Mencho’ in Jalisco Raid, Triggering Nationwide Unrest

U.S. intelligence support is confirmed, with reprisals disrupting travel.

Overview

  • Mexican defense officials say Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera was wounded in a Tapalpa operation on Sunday and died during an air transfer to Mexico City after troops came under fire.
  • The raid, designed and executed by Mexican forces with U.S. intelligence support, left four suspects dead, two detained, and yielded armored vehicles and heavy weapons including rocket launchers.
  • Suspected CJNG affiliates mounted widespread reprisals, torching vehicles and erecting more than 250 roadblocks reported across up to 20 states, though authorities later said most were cleared.
  • The U.S. Embassy and other governments urged people to shelter in place in affected regions, and airlines including Air Canada, United, American and others canceled flights to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.
  • Officials reported evolving casualty totals in related clashes, including at least seven National Guard personnel among the dead, as schools closed, security deployments expanded and Jalisco remained under heightened alert.
