Mexico Issues National Ocean Policy for Sustainable Seas and Coasts

The framework sets measurable targets to turn global pledges into coordinated action.

Overview

  • The Navy Secretariat published the Política Nacional para el Manejo Sustentable de Mares y Costas in the Diario Oficial, establishing it as Mexico’s main instrument to guide integrated coastal and ocean policy.
  • The plan was developed by the Intersecretarial Commission over two years and follows Mexico’s participation in the High‑Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy.
  • Its architecture sets 6 objectives, 17 strategies and 91 lines of action with defined targets and a time horizon.
  • Priority themes include sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, blue tourism, conservation and restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems, and strengthened ocean science and public information.
  • Implementation now turns to interagency coordination and financing, including public‑private support, to meet commitments under the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement and the KunmingMontreal biodiversity framework.
