Overview
- The pre-holiday survey analyzed 2,233 seawater samples from 289 beaches in 76 destinations across 17 coastal states under the national surveillance program.
- Six beaches were deemed not apt for recreation: Tijuana (Baja California), Mismaloya (Jalisco), El Veneno/Miramar and San Francisco (Sonora), Barra del Tordo (Tamaulipas), and José Martí (Veracruz).
- Technical reports show very high enterococci at Playa Blanca in Tijuana (6,681 NMP/100 mL) with elevated readings also at Baja Malibú, San Antonio del Mar, El Veneno/Miramar, José Martí, Mismaloya and San Francisco.
- Results reflect improvement since July, when 16 beaches failed, with 14 sites—such as Papagayo, Caletilla and Hornos in Guerrero, El Real in Colima, and Playa del Cuale and Camarones in Jalisco—now classified as apt.
- The assessments use the WHO threshold of 200 enterococci NMP/100 mL to judge suitability, and authorities say they will maintain surveillance and implement immediate sanitation to reduce health risks.
