Mexico City Police Report 24 Suspected Extortionists Detained in January

Officials attribute the results to a citywide strategy, urging victims to use dedicated hotlines.

Overview

  • Detentions spanned six boroughs — Álvaro Obregón, Cuauhtémoc, Benito Juárez, Tlalpan, Iztapalapa and Venustiano Carranza — and included one minor.
  • Operations ran from January 1 to 31 under a strategy directed by the head of government and security cabinet, with participation from intelligence units, the Auxiliary Police and the Banking and Industrial Police.
  • On January 9, three men were arrested in Venustiano Carranza after an alleged theft of more than 56,000 pesos, and authorities say they may be tied to a wider criminal group.
  • In Cuauhtémoc, police detained a suspect accused of confining a person in a hotel to demand money, and in Iztapalapa two women were arrested on warrants for aggravated continued extortion.
  • All detainees underwent preventive searches, were advised of their constitutional rights and were referred to the corresponding Ministerio Público; the SSC also shared prevention advice and hotlines 089 and 55 5036 3301 for reporting and support.
