Overview
- City and STC Metro officials reported on Saturday that the modernization program is more than 80% complete and that Auditorio station on Line 7 is expected to reopen in about 15 days.
- Work at Auditorio replaced roughly 3,500 meters of cable, installed LED lighting, sealed leaks, renewed signage and access points, upgraded CCTV and voice systems, and swapped turnstiles for continuous-access doors.
- Authorities say the program will finish full interventions at 20 priority stations, including many stops on Line 2 plus Bellas Artes, Universidad, Taxqueña, Zócalo and Garibaldi, to reduce service interruptions and improve safety.
- The effort is funded by the Metro's largest operating budget in history, more than 25 billion pesos, plus 1,500 million pesos in federal emergency funds and 700 million pesos from local/STC resources with about 1,300 million focused on deep structural work.
- Officials frame the World Cup as the reason to speed work but say the upgrades are permanent and that the city will keep subsidizing fares so rides remain five pesos despite an estimated real cost of 13 pesos per trip.
