Mexico City Lifts Ozone Alert as Regular ‘Hoy No Circula’ Rules Resume

Phase I ended once ozone fell under norms, with the short activation yielding hundreds of sanctions.

Overview

  • The environmental commission CAMe suspended the Phase I ozone contingency around 18:00 Friday after concentrations returned to permissible levels.
  • Hoy No Circula operates under its standard schedule; on Monday, January 12, vehicles with hologram 1 or 2, yellow sticker, and plates ending in 5 or 6 are restricted from 05:00 to 22:00.
  • Sedema reported 341 sanctions during the contingency period, including 325 for driving during restricted hours or on a prohibited day.
  • Enforcement also targeted emissions and nonresident vehicles, with 15 visibly polluting cars cited, 83 out-of-state drivers fined, and 258 plates removed.
  • The alert was triggered by a 160 ppb ozone peak at the Cuajimalpa station, and authorities say they are continuing to monitor air quality and forecasts for any potential reactivation.
