Mexico City Electric Transit Strike Pushed to Feb. 4 as Talks Proceed

Union demands for a 10% raise plus budget-backed fixes now carry added weight after the ITF linked labor peace to 2026 World Cup readiness.

Overview

  • Workers in the Alianza de Tranviarios de México voted to postpone the planned Jan. 21 stoppage, refiled the extension with the city labor tribunal, and set a new deadline for the first minute of Feb. 4.
  • SEMOVI chief Héctor Ulises García said Trolebús, Tren Ligero and Cablebús will run normally while negotiation tables continue, with the union pressing to include the Finance Secretariat to ensure any offer is funded.
  • The union seeks a 10% pay increase on top of the 13% federal minimum-wage hike and protection of salary tabulators, noting reports that 12 of 16 STE pay levels now fall below the new minimum.
  • Complaints also cover shortages of uniforms, protective equipment and tools, and the union says any proposal must be approved in a workers’ assembly.
  • The International Transport Workers’ Federation endorsed the union’s stance and warned that dependable service for World Cup 2026 depends on honoring labor accords.
