Mexico City Dragon-and-Lion Parade Draws Big Crowds Ahead of Lunar New Year

Organizers cite surging local interest and point to a wider slate of Fire Horse festivities coordinated across the Americas.

Overview

  • Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de las Culturas del Mundo, in collaboration with the local Chinese community, staged the Feb. 7 dragon-and-lion parade along Calle Moneda and Plaza de Seminario.
  • The turnout filled the square and overflowed free museum activities, with community leader Alfonso Chiu attributing the response to growing Mexican interest in Chinese traditions.
  • Performances featured multicolored dragon and lion dances to drums and cymbals, plus Chinese folk dances and martial-arts demonstrations including wushu and kung fu.
  • Cuauhtémoc authorities announced a Feb. 21 showcase featuring an 18‑metre dragon brought from China, to be animated by a 10‑person team alongside tai chi and kung fu displays.
  • The Lunar New Year begins Feb. 17 with the Year of the Fire Horse, and complementary public programs are scheduled in Los Angeles (Golden Dragon Parade on Feb. 21), Buenos Aires (Feb. 14–17) and Lima (Feb. 10–17).
