Mexico City Cyber Police Warn of WhatsApp and Telegram Scam Tied to TikTok 'Like' Payments

Authorities say the scheme leverages quick-cash offers to extract deposits or personal data from users.

Overview

  • On Feb. 5, the SSC’s Cyber Police issued a public alert about a fraud that circulates on WhatsApp and Telegram by promising money for simple interactions on TikTok.
  • Scammers contact users directly, build trust with a small initial payment or fabricated proof of earnings, and then push victims to make deposits, share personal details, or join groups touting bigger returns.
  • Once funds or data are obtained, the operators disappear, and the harvested information can be reused for identity theft or extortion that threatens victims’ digital and financial security.
  • The advisory urges people to distrust easy-money pitches, avoid sharing personal or banking data, refuse deposits to unknown accounts, verify claims through official sources, block and report suspicious profiles, and keep apps updated.
  • Citizens are asked to report attempts via 55 5242 5100 ext. 5086 or policia.cibernetica@ssc.cdmx.gob.mx, with no arrests or platform actions reported in the current advisories.
