Mexico Authorizes SEAL Training Mission as Senate Prepares Second U.S. Special-Ops Entry Vote

The Senate is set to vote this week on a separate request to admit 12 U.S. special-operations troops for a months-long training program with Mexico’s army.

  • A federal decree published Feb. 15 authorizes 19 U.S. Navy SEAL instructors to train Semar from Feb. 15 to Apr. 16 at San Luis Carpizo and the Naval Sector of Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche.
  • The program, titled “Mejorar la Capacidad de las Fuerzas de Operaciones Especiales,” centers on sharing special-operations skills under defined, time-limited terms.
  • The SEALs enter with weapons and equipment aboard a U.S. Air Force C-130 landing at Campeche International Airport, with pickup scheduled for Apr. 16.
  • The Senate’s Defense Committee is slated to vote Tuesday on an Executive request to admit 12 U.S. special-operations troops for “Capacitación MEXSOF (Defensa)” from Feb. 27 to Jul. 15.
  • The 12 would train at Temamatla and San Miguel de los Jagüeyes in the State of Mexico and at Military Air Base 4 in Cozumel, arriving via a U.S. Air Force flight to Santa Lucía and departing from Cozumel on Jul. 15, subject to approval.
