Mexico and Colombia Capture Suspected Los Lobos Leader Tied to Villavicencio Assassination

The fugitive was tracked through Operation Jericó while using a false Colombian identity, setting up extradition proceedings.

Overview

  • Mexican security forces, with support from Colombia’s National Police, detained a man identified as Ángel Esteban Aguilar Morales, alias Lobo Menor, in Polanco, Mexico City, without violence and turned him over to the National Institute of Migration.
  • Gustavo Petro and Mexico’s security chief Omar García Harfuch credited coordinated intelligence work under Operation Jericó for the capture of the suspect linked to the 2023 killing of ex–presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.
  • Authorities said the detainee initially presented Colombian documents under the name Juan Carlos Montero Mestre, an alleged tactic to evade controls that was later exposed through identity verification.
  • Mexico’s SSPC identifies him as a leader of Los Lobos and notes he was wanted on an Interpol red notice for drug trafficking, extortion and homicide, while Ecuador has a preventive detention order in the Villavicencio case.
  • Migración Colombia reported he was detained upon arrival in Bogotá on a flight from Mexico under the Interpol alert and placed under competent authorities to advance judicial processing and possible transfer to Ecuador.
