Mexicana Expands From AIFA With New Acapulco and Hermosillo Routes as Embraer Jets Arrive in May

The expansion signals a push to make AIFA a key gateway for World Cup travel despite pending U.S. charter approvals.

Overview

  • Mexicana de Aviación will launch AIFA–Acapulco in June and AIFAHermosillo in July, adding to the state airline’s growing domestic map.
  • Seven new Embraer aircraft are due in 2026, with the first arriving in May, which the airline says will lift its fleet to 12 by year‑end and to 20 after eight more arrive in 2027.
  • Since late 2023, the carrier reports about 953,600 passengers, 1,022,000 tickets sold, more than 19,900 flight hours, and over 14,400 commercial flights across 14 destinations.
  • For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mexicana is seeking U.S. clearance to run charter flights from AIFA, Monterrey, and Guadalajara to Seattle, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.
  • AIFA says it now handles about 41 domestic routes, five international routes, and 18,000–20,000 passengers a day, and FIFA selected the airport for dedicated team flights due to flexible landing times, even as Mexico works to resolve a U.S. Department of Transportation sanction.
