Mexican Senate Approves LFT Reform Extending Labor Rights to Artistic Workers

The bill now awaits review in the Chamber of Deputies, with effect one day after publication in the federal gazette.

Overview

  • Senators voted unanimously (96–0) to update Chapter XI of the Federal Labor Law, modifying articles 304 through 310.
  • The reform broadens coverage beyond actors and musicians to include dubbing, circus and puppetry, music and sound, dance, writing and scripting, visual arts, and film and photography.
  • It recognizes subordinate employment, opening access to social security and dignified pay, and requires employers to provide appropriate workplaces, including safe and hygienic dressing rooms when needed.
  • Hiring may be per project, fixed-term, indefinite, seasonal, or per function, with pay set by unit of work or time and differentiated by role category or artistic trajectory.
  • Backers say the measure targets widespread precariousness in a sector estimated to employ over one million people with limited formal protections, with implementation pending the Deputies’ vote and official publication.
