Mexican Army Kills CJNG Leader ‘El Mencho’ as Cartel Reprisals Paralyze Jalisco and Disrupt Flights

Defense officials say he died of wounds suffered in a Tapalpa raid, triggering coordinated blockades and arson across multiple states.

Overview

  • Mexico’s Defense Ministry confirmed that Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes was wounded in a Sunday operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, and died while being airlifted for treatment.
  • Following the raid, CJNG operatives burned vehicles and erected roadblocks across Jalisco and in other states including Michoacán, Guanajuato, Colima, Tamaulipas and Nayarit.
  • Operations at Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta airports were disrupted as airlines suspended or canceled flights; Air Canada halted Puerto Vallarta service and Delta issued waivers, with Southwest and Alaska canceling flights.
  • Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus activated a code red, suspended public transportation and urged residents to shelter at home as federal and state security forces moved to contain the violence.
  • The U.S. Embassy advised Americans in several states to shelter in place, and while videos showed chaos at transport hubs, reports of shootings and hostage-taking remained unverified by authorities.
