Metaplanet Launches BitBonds and Raises ¥200 Million in Private Sale

The unsecured yen bonds create a fixed‑rate funding channel that exposes investors to the company’s bitcoin‑linked balance sheet volatility.

Overview

  • Metaplanet completed four private BitBond series on Thursday, Aug. 13, raising about ¥200 million through unsecured senior bonds that mature in roughly three years and pay about 4.0%–4.3% interest.
  • The inaugural securities were distributed to eligible individuals and companies through Metaplanet Securities under Japan’s small‑number private placement rules and the bonds are unrated and unguaranteed.
  • The bonds carry no security interest in Bitcoin so repayment depends on Metaplanet’s creditworthiness rather than direct crypto collateral.
  • Metaplanet reported a ¥182.77 billion net loss driven by a ¥184.30 billion noncash Bitcoin valuation loss, said it still holds 43,000 BTC, and has drawn $414 million of a $500 million Bitcoin‑collateralized credit line.
  • The company said future BitBond issues will be set by funding needs, market conditions and investor demand and could shift to registered public offerings if the program scales, which would change liquidity and disclosure for investors.
