Meta Rolls Out WhatsApp Screen-Share Warnings, Tests Messenger AI to Curb Scams Targeting Seniors

The effort pairs real-time prompts with on-device detection and optional AI reviews to protect older users and harden accounts with passkeys and security checkups.

Overview

  • WhatsApp now shows a warning when you try to share your screen with an unknown contact during a video call to deter theft of banking details and verification codes.
  • Messenger is testing advanced scam detection that flags suspicious messages from new contacts, is enabled by default with an opt-out, and can send recent chats for AI review.
  • Meta says initial checks run on-device to preserve encryption, but messages voluntarily shared for AI review are no longer end-to-end encrypted.
  • Passkey login support and refreshed Security Checkup and Privacy Checkup tools are rolling out across Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
  • Meta reports disrupting about 8 million scam-linked accounts and taking action on over 21,000 impersonating customer support, alongside outreach with India’s DoT and Saksham Senior and participation in the National Elder Fraud Coordination Center.
