Meta Partially Reverses Horizon Worlds VR Exit, Keeps Existing Games Alive

User feedback prompted CTO Andrew Bosworth to keep the VR app running for existing titles, with Horizon’s growth now focused on mobile.

Overview

  • Meta will keep Horizon Worlds functioning in VR for current Unity-runtime games for the foreseeable future after initially planning a shutdown.
  • No new Horizon Worlds games will launch in VR as the company directs most development toward the mobile platform.
  • Earlier in the week, Meta said it would delist Horizon Worlds from the Quest store on March 31 and remove the VR version on June 15.
  • Bosworth said VR adoption has lagged expectations, reinforcing Meta’s shift in investment priorities toward mobile, AI and wearables.
  • Reality Labs has accumulated reported losses of roughly $70–$80 billion since 2021, with about 1,000–1,500 jobs cut in January, and Horizon Worlds has struggled to grow beyond a few hundred thousand users.
