Meta Launches Muse Image That Uses Public Instagram Photos for AI Creations

The company’s rules of no user notifications and opt-outs that only stop future reuse raise sharp consent and privacy questions for creators and everyday users.

Overview

  • Meta introduced Muse Image on July 7 as a generative image model from its Meta Superintelligence Labs and has embedded it in Meta AI, Instagram Stories and WhatsApp in the United States.
  • The tool can generate or edit pictures by referencing photos from public Instagram profiles when a user marks or mentions an account in a prompt.
  • Meta’s help documentation says people are not notified when their public photos are used and that opting out or deleting originals only prevents future reuse and does not remove AI images already created.
  • After widespread criticism from talent agencies and privacy groups, Meta said it removed the specific account-mention reference function and defended Muse Image’s built-in safety controls.
  • Muse Image is part of a broader push that includes plans for Muse Video and possible advertiser-facing uses, which experts warn could widen legal and reputational risks for creators and prompt regulatory scrutiny.
