Meta Hires Kunal Shah to Lead WhatsApp and Invests $900 Million in CRED

The deal is meant to speed WhatsApp’s push into payments, commerce and premium features to better monetise its large Indian user base.

Overview

  • Meta named CRED founder Kunal Shah global head of WhatsApp and made a roughly $900 million minority investment in CRED in a deal that values the fintech at about $4–4.5 billion, the companies confirmed.
  • The appointment and funding were announced this week, with Shah stepping away from day-to-day duties at CRED while keeping a stake and Miten Sampat serving as interim CEO as the board works toward a longer-term leadership plan.
  • Both Meta and Shah said the investment does not give Meta access to CRED member data, and Meta described the move as combining founder talent with capital to accelerate product work on WhatsApp.
  • The hire targets WhatsApp’s biggest market—about 500 million users in India—and aims to bolster payments and commerce on the app, but WhatsApp Pay currently trails leaders such as PhonePe and Google Pay and faces regulatory scrutiny.
  • The deal signals a broader Meta strategy of recruiting external founders and placing big bets on India’s digital payments and commerce landscape while leaving open execution and regulatory hurdles that will determine how quickly WhatsApp can monetise.
