Overview
- A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed and reported Tuesday shows Meta will cut 1,395 jobs in King County, with 699 in Bellevue, 259 across two Seattle offices, 206 in Redmond and 231 remote Washington positions, and separations set to begin July 22.
- The Seattle-area reduction is part of a companywide plan that began with notifications on May 20 and totals roughly 8,000 job eliminations globally, about 10% of Meta’s workforce.
- At the same time Meta has reassigned roughly 7,000 employees into AI-focused teams, shifting roles and closing some open positions to prioritize model development, data centers and related infrastructure.
- Meta says the cuts will help fund very large 2026 capital expenditures estimated in reporting at roughly $115 billion to $145 billion for data centers, chips and AI model work, and affected Washington employees will continue to receive pay and benefits through their termination dates per the filing.
- The moves are raising worker morale and privacy concerns, prompting public posts and petitions from employees, and they add to local economic strain in Seattle and the Bay Area that has seen concentrated tech job losses this year.
