Mercedes Unveils Third‑Generation GLA as an EV‑First Compact SUV

The redesign makes the GLA a volume electric model for Mercedes, setting out high-speed charging and a hybrid rollout plan that will shape its global launch.

Overview

  • Mercedes publicly revealed the new GLA on July 29–30, launching the third generation as an electric-first model and opening orders in Europe.
  • The initial electric lineup uses an 85 kWh usable NMC battery, an 800-volt electrical architecture and up to 320 kW DC charging with a claimed WLTP range of up to 657 km.
  • Two launch powertrains are confirmed: a single-motor GLA250+ with about 268 hp and a dual-motor GLA350 4MATIC with about 349 hp, with a 71 kWh variant and other permutations due in early 2027.
  • Mercedes confirmed mild-hybrid petrol GLA variants using a new 1.5L turbo, a 1.3 kWh battery and an electrified eight-speed dual-clutch transmission will arrive in 2027 and U.S. sales are planned for the second half of 2027.
  • The cabin centers on the latest MBUX with an optional Superscreen and generative-AI services from Google Gemini, ChatGPT and Bing, while the MMA platform increases interior space, adds a 107‑litre frunk on EVs, and aims to replace the outgoing GLA and EQA in Mercedes’ compact lineup.
