Mercedes Pivots on Little G: Baby G-Class to Offer Hybrid and EV in 2027

The compact off-roader changes course after disappointing uptake of the full-size electric G-Class.

Overview

  • Reporting across outlets says Mercedes has dropped an EV-only brief for the Little G and will sell it with both hybrid/petrol and fully electric powertrains.
  • Mercedes has confirmed a bespoke miniature ladder-frame architecture to preserve G-Class-style off-road capability rather than using a shared monocoque EV platform.
  • The petrol option is reported to use a turbocharged, hybrid-assisted 1.5-litre four-cylinder related to the CLA unit built by Horse Powertrain in China.
  • The EV is expected to launch first with dual eATS2.0 motors and an ~85 kWh NMC battery targeting a WLTP range near 450 miles (up to about 724 km in some reports).
  • Production has been pushed to 2027, with four-wheel drive set to be standard across variants and positioning aimed at rivals such as the Defender Sport, Land Cruiser FJ and Ford Bronco.
