Mercedes-Benz Reaches $149.6 Million Multi-State Deal to Settle U.S. Diesel Claims

The settlements still need court approval, with Mercedes-Benz maintaining it admits no liability.

Overview

  • The New York attorney general said the agreements total $149.6 million, including $120 million payable now and $29.6 million initially suspended.
  • State actions targeted environmental and consumer claims tied to 2009–2016 diesel models accused of excessive NOx emissions affecting about 250,000 vehicles.
  • Mercedes-Benz says it has completed software updates on more than 85% of affected cars and vans and plans incentives to boost further updates.
  • Letitia James said 48 states joined the settlements, which the company says would close the remaining major U.S. civil proceedings if approved by courts.
  • The company estimates its cumulative U.S. diesel-related costs at over €2 billion, and the Justice Department ended its criminal probe without charges in 2024.
